About

CJ Matherne lives and works in New York’s Catskills. He has an MFA from Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts, Bard College (2013) and a BFA from The School of The Art Institute of Chicago (2006).

His drawings, paintings, and sculptures depict imagined landscapes and figures that shift between the recognizable and the unreal. Forms resemble caves, cliffs, and sediment, but surfaces behave like skin or vapor. The work explores the vacillation between physical solidity and illusion, material presence and pictorial invention.
